Winter Soldiers: Yellowstone

Place your bid on Winter Soldiers: Yellowstone.
In 1985, on my first visit to Yellowstone National Park, I photographed these sturdy bison. Rather than hibernating, bison store energy in the humps on their back, to aid as they spend a winter searching for sparse food. They are quite powerful, and faster than you would think! Our guide warned us not to startle them, as we didn't want to encourage them to burn more energy than needed.
Homage to Goya: Spanish Kittens

Place your bid on Homage to Goya: Spanish Kittens.
These kittens showed up at the pilgrim’s hostel in Spain which I cohosted with my husband in September of 1995. The composition, from my own photograph, reminds me of a Goya portrait in the Met - three cats in the background look menacingly at a pet magpie held on a string by a tiny boy in a red suit. While my own rendition lacks the child or the magpie, I was happy to extend my hostessing to these kittens. This is the first impression of two monotypes.
Luncheon on the Grass: Bavaria

Place your bid on Luncheon on the Grass: Bavaria.
I have long been inspired by many compositions of Edgar Degas; he, in turn, was much influenced by Japanese wood cut prints and by the seemingly random visual framing enabled by the newly-invented box camera. The photograph on which this painting is based was kindly sent to me by a German friend, during the depths of lockdown. Seeing these livestock enjoying their routine in a foreign land brought me joy during a time I was unable to travel myself.
