“Like many other people, I worry about what humans are doing to one another all over the globe. Painting and drawing can be a form of meditation. I like to think my images can make a difference by reminding us of the spaces in our hearts reserved for peace and quiet.”
— Annie Shaver-Crandell says of her work

“I aim to make my work a counterweight to
destructive forces operating in the world.”— Annie Shaver-Crandell
About Annie

Before the recent disruption of most travel because of the COVID 19 pandemic, the artist traveled extensively, working en plein air in the American Rockies, the Provence region of France, Italy, along the Delaware River in New Jersey and on the north shore of Long Island. In her local environment, she paints and draws extensively in the community gardens of Manhattan's Lower East Side. Annie is attracted to boundaries -- the garden wall, the water's edge, the place where the cultivated field, pasture, vineyard or orchard gives way to the woods or hills.
In her studio, where light and climate can be better controlled, Shaver-Crandell often turns to floral still-lifes. These indoor pieces are frequently studies in color, offering possibilities for exploration of more of the full spectrum than the typical landscape.
Her figurative work includes studies of animals, either singly or in groups. As an avid dancer of Argentine tango, she is fascinated by the play of energies among beings -- whether tango partners, or the ways that herds will dispose themselves in a pasture.
